Whether you are new to homesteading or have been born into it, there
will always be questions to answer, things to invent, and stuff to fix
on the independent homestead.
Greetings! My name is Willa Mogollon. After a lifetime of ranching, farming, gardening and growing everything from cattle and alfalfa to corn to kids -- both 2 legged and 4 legged -- I've now "retired" to merely tending my garden, riding my horses and playing with my dogs.
But friends and neighbors often call for my opinion or experience or remedy for this and that; often shaking their heads and exclaiming, "You really ought to tell other people how to deal with that!" So here I am, offering to tell you what I know.
I am fourth generation ranching family from the Southwestern United States. My knowledge and experience are based in growing up on an 1800s style cattle ranch where my Uncle Tim did not allow a plow, a tractor or a motorized vehicle of any sort until somewhere in the 1980s; at which time he was somewhere in his 90s.
We learned all the "independent," "sustainable," "green" ways of living on the land right from the original horse's mouth. Uncle Tim was formerly Texan, half Injun, and all hard-working, practical, bull ridin', steer ropin' rancher. But he was also a conservationist, a permaculturist, and developed rotational grazing before society had even invented such terms.
If you want modern, high-tech solutions for how to manipulate the land or how to stimulate your cows into more milk production, you've come to the wrong place. But if what you want is a blueprint back to basics, sensible and common sense answers to everyday living with the land and leaving as little carbon footprint as possible on the planet, water, air and living things of this world, then you've come to the right place.
I'll do my best to answer your questions in a way that is applicable directly to you, your homestead, and your desired goals. Of course one of our favorite references is Mother Earth News. They are only one of many sources for info on homesteading. But generalities just don't always solve the problem.
